The Bunker #05 · How to Break Down the Asking-Fear Barrier
How to break down the asking-fear barrier immediately. How to start opening up new opportunities.
Hello friends! Welcome to chapter #05 of The Bunker. A Newsletter in which we talk about UX Design and the Freelance Journey, dedicated to those who are starting out in both worlds and who feel identified. From The Bunker, we accompany you on the way.
Let’s get started!
A few days ago I listened to an episode of a Spanish-speaking podcast that I like a lot (the same one that I will leave in this week's bookmarks below in the description).
The podcast is called "¿Cómo funciona tu negocio?" (how your business works?”, a podcast in which, as the name suggests, they ask you how your business works and through various questions they break down the guest's business.
They explain how they started, how they recruited their staff... In short, a series of questions that help you understand how the guest's business works and what they have done to get where they have got to. Know the decisions they have made along the way and understand how and why.
Ultimately, the podcast is about asking questions. Simply asking those questions that we have always been told we shouldn't ask, or that are simply not the kind of questions that should be asked.
Why? “Because the way I have set up my business, which allowed me to make tons of money in the long run, is a formula that has taken me a long time to learn, that has caused me to make a lot of mistakes. So why would I ask someone how to do a particular thing, when it has taken them years to figure it out.”
This is the perception that many people have of the design world. "If I ask him where he got those 3D resources from, he won't tell me because they are super exclusive and he must have had a lot of trouble finding them". When the reality is completely different.
A few years ago I had this mentality, I didn't want to ask people for fear of offending them or asking “stupid” questions so that they would answer "find out for yourself, as we have all done". Which is completely wrong.
The reality is that there are a lot of people who will tell you to "find out for yourself", but the reality is that there are also a lot of people who are willing to give you the answers you need just by asking them a simple question. Maybe for every 10 times you ask, you will get 3 answers. But the value of those 3 unique answers is immense.
For every 10 times you ask, you will get 3 answers. But the value of those 3 unique answers is immense.
The bottom line is that you will never know if the other person is willing to help you. The reality is that just as there are many people who are not willing to help you, there are also people who are. What is the way to find out? ASK.
ASK, ASK, ASK.
This is something I like to do a lot. In the worst-case scenario, will they leave the chat empty? Won’t they answer me? If that is the issue, hahahaha. Ask, next. Ask.
You are not aware of how many doors you automatically close by thinking "I'm not going to ask what I don't know, lest they get offended". There’s nothing more honest in this world than asking what you don't know.
So you know, ask everything you don't know. You'll be surprised at the value you can get.
If I can help you with anything. Ask me.
Cheers, Jordi Espinosa.
